If your Mitsubishi emits black exhaust smoke the problem could well be your EGR sticking open. The problem could with the turbo injectors or pump but this is the easiest quickest and cheapest modification to eliminate a common cause of that smoke. All Pajero, Shogun and Delica 4X4s have reduced power from new because of the existence of the EGR Valve

This Kit Contains:
  • 2 X Stainless Steel Blanking Plates
  • 1 X Exhaust Quality Gasket
  • 2 X Stainless Steel Replacement Bolts
  • 2 X stainless Steel Nuts
  • 4 X Stainless Steel Flat Washers
  • 2 X Stainless Steel Spring Washers
  • 1 X Blanking End For Vacuum Hose
EGR Valve / “Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve”
Technical Experts explain the downside of having an EGR valve: “Adding an EGR Valve to a diesel engine reduces the specific heat ratio of the combustion gases in the power stroke. This reduces the amount of power that can be extracted by the piston.”
You lose power even when it is brand new. It recirculates all the burnt oil fumes and all the other rubbish that comes out of your exhaust directly back into your inlet manifold which needs pure air and pure diesel vapour to get the most from your engine and that’s with a perfectly working EGR. In practice exhaust fumes cause hard black carbons similar to you find in a dirty oven to clog up the valve in the EGR and cause it to stick open.
The EGR is designed to open and shut actuated by the suction through that small air pipe that goes to the diaphragm but it is much to weak to overcome the resistance caused by carbon build up leading too it cloging up both itself and all the valves etc in the head.
Some buy an overpriced ball bearing which may in some cases make a difference. It will stop suction through the vacuum air pipe and opening the valve. The problem with blocking the vacuum pipe alone is that EGR valve may be partially open due to impedance from carbon build up around them.
The Only Complete and sure answer is Throw The EGR Valve away. It is like having a grumbling appendix. Remove it and you'll never miss it but you'll certainly feel better without it.The EGR is there to overcome strict emission laws in Japan which do not apply here so it is just one more thing waiting to go wrong. It will fail it is just a matter of time. Some major importers remove them routinely.
The power may increase by 5% with the EGR valve removed according to some researchers.
