We specialize in repairing diesel fuel pumps, heads and turbos but offer help on any problem you may have with your Mitsubishi. Our mechanics also repair Pajero, Shogun & Delica engines, drive gear and transmissions.
Diesel fuel pump seals are discussed regularly on Pajero forum sites. They suffer from the hot oil environment on one side and sulphur in the diesel on the other which results in plasticizing of the rubber in the oil seal causing major common problems.
Every diesel Pajero will need the front seal replacing at some point in its life.
Symptoms are:
- The engine cuts out soon after starting but will restart after much turning over, strangely it may happen at the identical distance each time, annoyingly at a road junction as you decelerate. It may mostly drive normally for the rest of the journey. But it will probably get progressively harder to start eventually flattening the battery.
- Diesel will get into the sump so the oil level may rise. Your mechanic would probably suspect someone had overfilled it.
- Dirty oil will get into the diesel tank and the fuel filter will become blackened.
- Fuel economy will deteriorate
- It may lose power when under load or accelerating
Some try to mask this problem by fitting an electrical pump inline, Mitsubishi fuel pumps use a vacuum to lift the fuel. They don’t use a pump to push it for good reasons. One being that it will push the diesel past the seal into the oil in the sump. Although an electrical pump may appear to solve the problem, diesel will continue to seep into the engine oil causing rapid wear of the engine. Dirty engine oil will continue to get into the fuel tank poisoning the fuel pump and injectors. The electrical pump will continue to gush diesel as long as the ignition is on. So in an accident if a pipe leaks fuel will continue to pump until the tank is empty.
It could make your insurance null and void if your insurance company was looking for a reason to avoid paying out, insurance investigators could pick this up as an undeclared modification and it is dangerous.
